In this Forum, Wade Alonzo will trace his trajectory into social marketing in his positions and focus on using the Positive Culture Framework to advance traffic safety on behalf of the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

Wade has worked for the State of Washington for 28 years in. He started as a forester with the Department of Natural Resources in 1995 and over the next 17 years, worked in several diverse roles including wildland firefighter, aquatic land policy, and constituent relations manager. During that time, he was a fire prevention officer for 8 counties and learned to love the work of community based social marketing.

In 2011, he transitioned to Washington State Parks and became Washington’s third Boating Law Administrator, managing Washington’s Boating Safety Program.

In 2018, he became the Program and Services Director of the  Washington Traffic Safety Commission.  As the Program and Service Division Director, Wade is responsible for leading program managers in the following program areas: Impaired Driving, Community Traffic Safety, Tribal Traffic Safety, Distracted Driving, Motorcycle, Non-Motorized, Occupant Protection, Speed, and Young Driver Program.  Wade has worked with the incredible WTSC team to adopt the Positive Culture Framework in their work of preventing fatal and serious traffic crashes.  He is a husband, father of three, cycling enthusiast, avid reader, nerd, and clumsy but enthusiastic home chef.

Wade has a Bachelor of Forest Science  from the University of Idaho, and a Masters of Business Administration from Washington State University.
